A 16-year-old boy who died in a car crash in South Park on Sunday night has been identified as Mario Luis Martinez Herrera.

Denny International Middle School, where Herrera once attended, released a letter to students’ families identifying the teen driver. Also killed in the crash was Luciana “Lucie” Hernandez, an eighth-grader at the school, according to school officials.

Hernandez’s older sister, Karla, a ninth-grader at Chief Sealth International High School, was also in the accident and is being treated at Harborview, according to the letter written by Principal Jeff Clark.

Hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said the girl is in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit. Two other youths were hospitalized after the crash. It’s unclear what their medical conditions are.

Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said that police have heard accounts that the crash was caused by racing.

“Detectives will be talking to the young man who said this was a racing type of situation,” Witt said. “Speed may have been a factor in the collision.”

Five people were riding inside a 1990 Acura Integra traveling north on 8th Avenue South when Herrera apparently lost control of the car on a curve. The vehicle struck a telephone pole in the 9200 block just after 8 p.m.

Hernandez died shortly after arriving at Harborbiew.

Clark, in his letter, said “Today at school we had a moment of silence, an eighth-grade class meeting, individual and group grief counseling and a place for interested students to come together at lunch time. Additionally, students had an opportunity to begin to create a tribute which will be displayed at school and then taken to the service to be given to Lucie’s family.”
