Trooper hit by passing car’s mirror, gets up, makes DUI arrest

A Washington State Patrol trooper in Olympia was knocked over by a car mirror, got back in his patrol car, and arrested the passing motorist on suspicion of driving under the influence early Sunday.

The incident happened at 2 a.m. on westbound Pacific Avenue Southeast, near Interstate 5. Trooper Rob Howson was on the roadside walking toward a stopped motorist when he saw a Nissan sedan veer toward him, the State Patrol said.  He  jumped, but was knocked down by the mirror.

Howson rolled over, and rushed back to his patrol car to follow the sedan.  The driver, a 28-year-old Puyallup woman, was  booked into the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of drunken driving, said Guy Gill, a State Patrol spokesman, who added that other charges are possible after prosecutors review the case.

Howson was treated at a hospital for cuts and scrapes, after being “very lucky” not to be hit by the front of the sedan, said Gill.
