Bellevue College will begin offering two new bachelor’s degree programs in fall of 2013 — one in nursing, and the other in information systems and technology.

The state community college received the go-ahead Thursday from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, which must approve new degree programs proposed by the state’s 34 community and technical colleges. Bellevue College already offers three bachelor’s degree programs.

The college did extensive labor-market research before settling on the two degree programs, according to a release. It found that many hospitals and health-care providers are starting to require that nurses hold a bachelor of science in nursing. Bellevue College already offers an accredited associate degree nursing program, which was founded in 1967, and students who already have associate degrees will be primary candidates for the program.

The college based the second degree on findings by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that a bachelor’s degree is now considered the minimum level of education for a variety of technical occupations. The information systems and technology degree will be the first of its kind in the state.
