Four people escape car struck by train in Edmonds

Four people escaped from a car before it was struck by a train Saturday night in Edmonds.

Edmonds Police say the car, driven by a 24-year-old Seattle woman, got stuck on the tracks around 11:30 p.m.. The occupants bailed out when they saw the northbound training bearing down on them. “It could have been so much worse,” said Edmonds Police Sgt. Mark Marsh.

Everyone made it safely to the sidewalk, where they watched the train smash into the car and push it nearly 1,000 feet.

The accident occurred at the Dayton Street crossing, where the road crosses two sets of tracks, Marsh said. The vehicle’s occupants had just left a wedding reception, and the driver was unfamiliar with the area.  She cleared one set of tracks, but turned too soon and got stuck on the second set.

Edmonds Police and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad are investigating the incident.
