Inside Bainbridge: Midwife recounts delivery of ferry boat baby Lucy

Therese Charvet thought her ferry ride to Seattle Thursday afternoon was going to be routine, but, well, it was anything but, she tells our community news partner Inside Bainbridge.

When a call for medical assistance crackled over the ferry intercom, Charvet, a retired midwife, thought it was probably someone having a heart attack.

But it was the impending birth of baby Lucy, who was delivered on the ferry with the help of Charvet, a delivery and labor nurse and two EMTs.

Said Charvet of the experience,

“It was totally a gift — a thrilling gift to be part of . . . I haven’t delivered a baby in maybe 15 years, but I’ve delivered hundreds and it all came right back to me.”
