More than $6,000 in Christmas toys stolen from Seattle YWCA

The Grinch is alive and well, and spent some time in Seattle’s Central District recently.

The Cherry Street office of the YWCA reports that $6,250 in Christmas toys destined for needy children were stolen in a burglary over the weekend, says Julie Kettman, the director of communications at the Seattle YWCA.

“It is a sad demonstration of the sort of desperation in our community,” Kettman said.

Seattle police say it’s not clear when the toys were stolen.  A YWCA staff member noticed the storage door was open on Friday, but didn’t think anything of it at the time, according to police. The theft was discovered this morning.

Kettman said the toys were purchased for needy children in the Central District by Rick’s Toys for Kids, a nonprofit formed by Seattle Mariners broadcaster Rick Rizzs and former Mariner Dave Henderson.
