Northbound Highway 529 bridge will remain closed through Tuesday
The northbound Highway 529 bridge between Everett and Marysville, damaged in a car accident early Saturday, won’t reopen until Tuesday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Officials originally hoped to reopen the bridge on Monday, but said Sunday that the repairs were too difficult, especially given the wet, windy weather.
A driver speeding away from police early Saturday morning lost control and crashed her SUV into the bridge, damaging two steel beams that support the bridge deck. The bridge was closed for safety reasons at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
The bridge, built in 1927, carries about 15,000 cars a day. The southbound lanes of the highway, which are on a second, unconnected bridge, are open.
The driver of the SUV has been booked into Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The State Patrol said it will seek to have her insurance cover the cost of the bridge repairs, estimated at $30,000.
