Saturday Memo: Snow dump … marijuana in bars … ukelele-wielding thief

Rain here, snow there: Heavy storms dumped fresh snow across the Cascades on Thursday and Friday, and it’s still coming down. About 4 inches have fallen at Snoqualmie Pass and 27 inches at Stevens Pass within 24 hours.

Pot bar: If you’re a “Friend of Frankie,” you can now smoke pot in his Olympia bar. The bar owner had battled the state to allow cigarette-smoking clients access to the second floor of his bar, which is more than 25 feet from the entrances to his downstairs bar. And now, members of “Friends of Frankie” can smoke pot there, too. Is it legal? The city is checking into the law. KING 5 has the story.

Remember the ukelele-wielding thief who attacked a West Seattle convenience store employee after being confronted about his attempts to shoplift a six-pack of beer? Grainy surveillance-camera images of the suspect have been released, and detectives are looking for any tips as to the identity of the man.

Deadly dog virus: An emergency-veterinary clinic has issued an alert about a possible outbreak of the parvovirus, which can be especially deadly for puppies. Dogs need a series of three parvo vacccines, at $25 a pop, to be properly immunized. The cost of treating a dog with parvo ranges from $1,500 to $7,000, with a 90 percent survival rate.

Recreational fishers vs. commercial fishers: Oregon has voted to ban the use of gillnets by commercial fishers on the main stem of the Columbia River. Recreational fishers say gillnets — which snag fish by the gills and prevent them from breaking free, and is the primary tool for commercial fishing — is harmful to the recovery of endangered salmon. Washington’s fish commission is set to vote soon, and will decide whether gillnets should be banned on both sides of the river.
