Driver killed in crash during police chase in Renton
A driver who led Kent police and King County sheriff’s deputies on a chase was killed Saturday morning when his car rolled down a ravine in Renton.
Kent police started pursuing the suspected drunk driver as he headed south on Interstate 5 at about 4 a.m. after he failed to stop. The officers asked for assistance from the Sheriff’s Office, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Cindi West.
Deputies joined the pursuit, chasing the driver south on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. At some point the driver rammed his car into the car of one of the deputies pursuing him, West said.
The suspect’s car careened off the road in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Junior Way South, where it becomes Sunset Road. The vehicle rolled about 30 feet down a ravine and hit several trees.
The driver died at the scene.
The deputy whose car was hit by the suspected drunken driver was taken to the hospital with back pain, but was later released, West said.
