Labrador retriever is Seattle’s most popular dog

The results are in and the Lab is once again the dog of choice for folks in the Emerald City, says the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Who doesn’t love Labs? The club’s rankings of the most popular AKC-recognized breeds nationwide put the Labrador Retriever at number one, too.

Big dogs reigned over small dogs, but Yorkies, chihuahuas and Shih Tzus have been in the top 20 in recent years.

Seattle’s most popular breeds:

2012 2011
1 Labrador Retriever 1 Labrador Retriever
2 Golden Retriever 2 Golden Retriever
3 German Shepherd Dog 3 French Bulldog
4 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 4 German Shepherd Dog
5 French Bulldog 5 Poodle

A few other things of note: The German Shepherd Dog moved into third place, bumping the French Bulldog to fifth. The Cavalier King moved from seventh to fourth and the Havanese went from tenth to sixth.

Nationally, the most popular breeds last year were:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd Dog
  3. Golden Retriever
  4. Beagle
  5. Bulldog

For more information on the rankings, you can find all you might want to know at the AKC’s web site.
