From Staff Reporter Sara Jean Green

A 57-year-old woman struck two bicyclists with her car Saturday night, killing one man and injuring a second on northbound Highway 547 in Whatcom County, according to the State Patrol.

After checking on the cyclists, the driver left the scene in her damaged 1994 Ford Escort, but was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail on investigation of hit-and-run, according to the State Patrol. The incident, which occurred a little after 8 p.m., is under investigation and additional charges are possible, according to the State Patrol.

Steven Waterman, 36, of  Maple Falls, died at the scene; his riding companion, 51-year-old Daniel McKay, also of Maple Falls, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, according to the State Patrol. Neither man was wearing a helmet.
