Bellingham woman admits she shot herself; there was no masked man

A Bellingham woman admitted to police today that there was no masked suspect, and she shot herself in the chest at her apartment Thursday morning.

Bellingham police had been looking for a suspect the 25-year-old woman described until Friday afternoon, when she told detectives she had accidentally shot herself at her apartment in the 3000 block of Pacific Street.

The small caliber handgun she used is owned by her boyfriend, who was not home at the time of the shooting, according to Bellingham police.

Police have forwarded the case to the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
