New executive director of special education named for Seattle Public Schools

Seattle Public Schools has hired California administrator Zakiyyah McWilliams to direct its special education department, which has lacked stable leadership for years and has been plagued with complaints that it ill serves students.

McWilliams started her career as a special education teacher, according to a Seattle Public Schools news release, and has worked as a principal, a school-improvement consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education and, since 2007, as a special education administrator in the Compton Unified School District.  In all, the release said, McWilliams has more than 30 years of experience in education.

McWilliams is scheduled to start her new job in Seattle in mid-May.  District officials said she was one of six candidates from across the nation vetted by a hiring committee with representatives from teachers, district families, administrators, the district’s Special Education Advisory and Advocacy Council, and the Seattle Alliance of Black Educators.

McWilliams’ appointment is the second top leadership post that the district has filled in the past few weeks.   Superintendent Jose Banda also recently announced that Michael Tolley, an internal candidate, would head of the district’s teaching and learning department.
