Pickup hits and kills 10-year-old Spanaway boy

A 10-year-old Spanaway boy was struck and killed by a pickup this evening while riding his bicycle, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, rode in front of  the truck as he left a friend’s driveway at about 6:45 p.m. on the 1550 block of 66th Avenue East, said  Sheriff’s department spokesman Ed Troyer.

Troyer said the 64-year-old man driving the pickup slammed on his breaks before striking the boy, and was not impaired at the time of the accident. He said the child was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The boy was a 5th grader on spring break from Naches Trail Elementary.
