Police jail suspect shot by man he tried to rob in West Seattle

A 19-year-old felon is in jail after being shot twice by a man he allegedly shot in a failed West Seattle robbery attempt Monday night, according to police.

Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendez, pointed a gun at a 27-year-old for-hire driver he tried to rob around 11 p.m. near Southwest Charlestown Street and Avalon Way Southwest, according to the Seattle Police Department.

After the driver, who has a concealed weapon permit, pulled out his own gun, Garcia-Mendez allegedly shot his victim several times in the chest. Police said Garcia-Mendez was then shot in the hip and hand by the driver, but was able to flee the scene. His victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition and is still being treated for his injuries.

Garcia-Mendez’s girlfriend eventually called police about her boyfriend’s injuries and medics responded to Delridge Way Southwest and Southwest Findlay Street, to take him to Harborview, according to police. He refused to tell police who had shot him.

Detectives say surveillance video clearly shows that Garcia-Mendez, who had just been released from prison in Yakima and had left the area without permission, initiated the West Seattle attack. Seattle police said they are still searching for men who may have been accomplices in the robbery attempt.

After being treated at Harborview for his gunshot wounds, Garcia-Mendez was taken to King County Jail, where he’s being held in lieu of $1 million bail on charge of first-degree assault.
