Wrong-way driver on I-5 hits Tukwila residents head-on

A wrong-way driver on Interstate 5 struck a vehicle with two Tukwila residents in it head-on Monday morning, sending both to Harborview Medical Center. The wrong-way driver was taken to Highline Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.

Washington State Patrol said they are investigating whether a 41-year-old southbound driver from Seattle was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he attempted to exit the northbound side of Interstate 5 at Southcenter Parkway in Tukwila just after 8 a.m.

As he headed into the exit, his Dodge pickup slammed into a Saturn sedan driven by 52-year-old James Wheeler. Monday night, Haborview said Wheeler’s condition was unknown and his car’s 62-year-old passenger, Dean Vangen, was in serious condition.

Trooper Julie Judson says detectives are continuing to investigate the accident as they await lab results that will show whether the driver was under the influence.
