27-year-old dies in parachuting accident in Snohomish County

A 27-year-old man from Vancouver, Wash., died around 4 p.m. Friday while parachuting with Skydive Snohomish, an operation that launches out of Harvey Field in Snohomish County.

Shari Ireton, spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, said the man’s parachute was deployed, but “for some reason he still hit the ground very fast.”

Medical aide was called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. She said the sheriff’s office would be investigating the incident.

Elaine Harvey, a spokeswoman for Skydive Snohomish, said the victim was an experienced skydiver with a history of over 400 jumps.

She said the “fully functioning” parachute was deployed without incident. The victim’s injuries were sustained while attempting to execute “a highly advanced maneuver,” she said.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the victim and the official cause of death.
