High-speed Lynnwood chase ends in fatal crash

A 72-year-old man died Friday night after his van was struck at high speed by a vehicle driven by a felon fleeing police.

The driver who apparently caused the accident, a 42-year-old Snohomish County woman suspected of driving under the influence of drugs, was arrested and jailed for investigation of vehicular homicide and other crimes after she was treated for injuries at an Edmonds hospital.

Lynnwood Police said the incident began when an officer saw a van with two convicted felons inside shortly after 8 p.m. around 200th Street Southwest and state Highway 99. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, who is a convicted felon and had two pending misdemeanor warrants for her arrest, sped away eastbound on 196th Street Southwest.

The officer chased the van for about two miles, until it broadsided another van in the intersection of 44th Avenue West and 212th Street Southwest, on the Lynnwood-Mountlake Terrace border. The man in the other van was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died about two hours later.

A passenger in the van pursued by policeĀ  was also transported to Harborview with serious injuries. Police said the man was a convicted felon and was wanted on a felony warrant.

Police asked any citizens who witnessed the accident to call them at 425-670-5600.
