Assault rifle goes off, Ore. child killed

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old girl has been killed and a woman wounded in Grants Pass after an assault rifle went off, firing a burst through the ceiling.

Police say a 30-year-old man was arrested Thursday night on charges of manslaughter, assault and illegal possession of the gun.

Police described Jon Andrew Meyer Jr. as a transient. A statement said he was in a downstairs room of an apartment when the weapon went off, and the girl and the woman were upstairs in the same apartment.

A neighbor, Chris Mehl, told The Grants Pass Daily Courier he heard a gunshot, then a rapid firing. He said he went outside and found the girl  on the sidewalk. and tried to help her.

From the newspaper’s story:

“I tried to put a compress to stop the blood,” Mehl said. “I tried to move her as little as possible. I tried to do what I could.

The victims were not immediately identified.
