Bear killed in Alaska same one that fatally mauled man

The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE — Alaska State Troopers say a black bear killed near the scene of a mauling last week at a remote Alaska lake was the animal responsible for the deadly attack.

A Troopers spokeswoman said some remains of 64-year-old Robert Weaver of Fairbanks were found in the adult male bear’s stomach. That, along with the fact there were no other bears in the area, led to the determination.

Weaver and his wife, who hasn’t been identified, were at a cabin at George Lake last Thursday evening when the bear attacked. The lake is about 110 miles southeast of Fairbanks.

The wife sought shelter in the cabin. Responding officials found Weaver’s body outside the cabin and the wife traumatized.

A trooper killed the bear after it stalked him while he was investigating the death.
