City Council committee approves limits on crime checks in hiring

A committee of the Seattle City Council Wednesday approved a bill that would prohibit the use of check boxes for criminal history on job applications and would allow employers to reject otherwise qualified applicants with a criminal past only if there’s a legitimate business reason to do so.

A majority of the six councilmembers who participated in the Public Safety Committee hearing voted down a series of amendments supported by business that advocates said would have significantly weakened the bill.

The full council will vote on the legislation Monday. Advocates said the bill, which covers all businesses in the city, will offer a second chance to people who have served their time and paid their debt to society.
