The ramps between Mercer Street and Interstate 5 will close this weekend, so workers can put some finishing touches on the Mercer East project. And Mercer Street itself will be closed from Fairview Avenue North to Westlake Avenue North.
The shutdown will last from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. The University Street ramp to northbound I-5 will also close, as is usual, to avoid creating a dangerous merge. Drivers should expect delays crossing the South Lake Union area, especially on east-west Denny Way.
Tasks this weekend include lane striping, repaving near the foot of the off-ramps, and installation of overhead signs, said Rick Sheridan, spokesman for the Seattle Department of Transportation.
City contractors have finished rebuilding Mercer as a six-lane, two way boulevard and are now reconstructing Valley Street as a two-lane route to the lakefront, including walkways and bicycle lanes.
If the sign installation moves quickly, this might be the last weekend closure of the I-5 Mercer ramps, though the city is making no promises yet, Sheridan said.
