Open house on proposed downtown streetcar

The City of Seattle will host an open house Thursday to hear public comments and questions on a proposed street car line to connect South Lake Union and First Hill. The line, known as the Center City Connector, is being studied to add service in one of the city’s most heavily used corridors.

Mayor Mike McGinn announced today that a street car had been selected over expanded bus service as the preferred mode because it could carry more people and require fewer drivers. An analysis completed by the Seattle Department of Transportation concluded that 150 additional buses per hour into the city center would be required during morning peak hours, compared with 20 two-car or 10 four-car trains.

The city will now study two possible routes through downtown, one on First Avenue and the other a couplet on Fourth and Fifth Avenues. The city also will analyze whether the street car should operate in mixed traffic or a dedicated lane.

The open house will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the South Lake Union Discovery Center, 101 Westlake Ave. N.
