Inmate’s death is 8th in Snohomish County Jail since 2010

A female inmate at the Snohomish County Jail has died. She is the eighth inmate to die in the facility since 2010.

The woman, 51, died Friday night in the jail’s medical unit, where she has been held since she was booked into the jail last Wednesday, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said. Corrections staff were checking the woman at least every hour when they found her not breathing and unresponsive at 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The inmate was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

A death investigation is being conducted by sheriff’s major-crimes detectives, as is standard procedure.  When the criminal investigation is completed, an administrative investigation will be conducted to assess if there were any policy or procedural violations, the sheriff’s office said.

Identification of the inmate, as well as cause and manner of her death, will be determined and released by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Justice Department plans to review operations and medical services at the jail following the inmate deaths. The review was requested earlier this year by county Executive John Lovick when he was sheriff.

The jail in Everett has about 1,200 inmates and a staff of about 340.
