Injured hiker rescued at Snohomish County mountain lake

A hiker who suffered a severe leg injury at Blanca Lake near the town of Index, Snohomish County, was taken by helicopter to a hospital Friday.

Before emergency medical responded, off-duty nurses who were in the rugged mountain area bandaged the man’s open leg fracture. The Index, Gold Bar and Skykomish fire departments and Search and Rescue responded to a report around 4:40 p.m. that the man, in his 50s, needed help at the southwest corner of the lake.

A Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office helicopter transported the man to Providence Everett Medical Center by 7 p.m., where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
