Metro bus ad on Palestinian Authority sparks new debate

Six King County Metro Transit buses have begun carrying advertisements accusing the Palestinian Authority of “calling for a Jew-free state.”

And, like a 2010 ad that alleged Israeli war crimes, the hot-button ad is drawing criticism.

The new ad, contracted for four weeks by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, says:

“The Palestinian Authority Is Calling For A Jew-Free State

“Equal Rights For Jews”

The New York-based sponsor said the ad is “a direct response” to a recent ad sponsored by the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign that carried this message for four months on up to 12 Metro buses:

“Equal Rights For Palestinians

“The Way to Peace”

Mideast Awareness Campaign spokesman Ed Mast objected to the latest ad, saying it reflects unfair treatment by King County, which canceled his organization’s “fact-based, well-documented” ad in 2010 asserting Israeli war crimes, but accepted the Freedom Defense Initiative’s “false, distorted, made-up accusation” against the Palestinian Authority.

A federal appeals court is reviewing a trial judge’s decision that upheld King County’s cancellation of the war-crimes ad.

Metro spokesman Jeff Switzer said the latest ad conforms with the county’s policy for bus advertising.
