Monday Memo: Suspect in girl’s death in court … Gorge death … Heat precautions

Suspect in the Molly Conley shooting to appear in court today: Erick Walker, 26,  is expected to make his first appearance in Snohomish County Superior Court this afternoon. He was arrested in connection with the drive-by shooting that killed 15-year-old Molly Conley of Seattle. Conley was shot and killed on June 1 in Lake Stevens while celebrating her 15th birthday with friends.

Drug overdose kills one: And 100 were sickened by a drug called a “Molly” at a concert at the Gorge over the weekend. Not many details about this nasty incident, but young people obviously are carelessly taking pills, the contents of which they are oblivious to. A Molly is reportedly  a pure and potent form of Ecstasy. And whatever they took at the ampitheatre concert may have had other ingredients, too. KOMO has the story.

This hot weather was likely a contributor to the death of a 10-year-old boy who was in the Stillaguamish River yesterday afternoon when he was swept away and drowned. He was with his family at Twin Rivers Park near Arlington when he disappeared in the cold, fast water. His body was later found downstream.

It’s going to be hotter today than yesterday, so you might want to take precautions in all this heat. Everyone, especially children, should drink lots of liquids. Use sunscreen. Check on disabled or elderly neighbors who may not have ways to take refuge from the heat. Avoid too much exercise, because heat stroke is a risk. Be careful if you seek relief in rivers and lakes. Don’t leave children or pets in your car. If you have air conditioning, you might want to use it.

Gas prices higher today than a year ago. AAA says the average price of a gallon in the state is $3.79, up 12 cents over July 1 last year. However, that’s 2 cents lower than a week ago and 15 cents lower than a month ago. Some numbers from around the state: Bellingham $3.81, Bremerton $3.76, Seattle-Bellevue-Everett $3.83, Tacoma $3.74, Olympia $3.77, Vancouver $3.78, Yakima $3.77, Tri-Cities $3.65, and Spokane $3.76.
