Replica of handgun gets man arrested at UW library
A man was arrested Sunday in the University of Washington Odegaard Library after students observed a replica handgun in his waistband, police said.
The UW Police Department received reports around 4:30 p.m. Sunday of a man with gun in the library, Cmdr. Steve Rittereiser said. Officers found the 23-year-old man in the library computer lab with what looked like a 9mm handgun tucked into his pants.
The man, who is not a UW student, was arrested without incident and escorted out of the library. Officers discovered then that it the gun was a replica, Rittereiser said.
“It was being carried in a manner that would be alarming,” Rittereiser said. “Quite frankly, it looks very realistic.”
The man was arrested on a misdemeanor weapons violation, Rittereiser said. He has not been formally charged.
