Injured hiker flown off Silver Peak

UPDATE 5:30 a.m. | The hiker injured near Snoqualmie Pass was flown by Navy helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  He has suffered a broken leg, but appeared to be in stable condition.

Previous post | King County Search and Rescue is dispatching a team and has the help of  a U.S. Navy helicopter to rescue an injured hiker near Silver Peak about five miles from Snoqualmie Pass.

The team received the call at 8:20 p.m. The unidentified hiker has a broken leg but is in stable condition. Once rescued, the hiker will likely be taken to Harborview Medical Center, said Glenn Wallace, spokesman for KCSAR.

A little more than 30 responders are on the ground as the helicopter heads toward the injured hiker  just in case it is unable to hoist the patient. The King County Sheriff’s  Department helicopter was unavailable for use this evening, which is why the Navy helicopter is being used. Wallace said the KCSAR is prepared for an on ground rescue if necessary. He was unsure how long the nighttime rescue may take.

“(The helicopter pilot) may get up there and say ‘too many trees,’ ‘too much wind’… we have to deploy on the ground as we can’t wait and see about the helicopter,” Wallace said.
