Suspected car thief crashes SUV, has to be cut out

A suspected car thief and his passenger were hospitalized after he crashed a stolen 2002 Chevy Avalanche SUV into a building at Rainier Avenue South and South Charlestown Street and had to be cut out of the vehicle by Seattle firefighters.

According to the Seattle Police, the white SUV was racing southbound on Rainier at 2:15 Sunday when  it nearly struck a patrol car. Police said the car was moving so fast they nearly lost sight of it. Moments later, they found it lodged against a building, which was significantly damaged, according to police.

The driver, a 26-year-old male, had serious but not life-threatening  injuries. The passenger, a 22-year-old female, had minor injuries. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center.
