Wednesday Memo: Deadly beer heist … Jail tussle … Window smasher

Were they drinking before the beer theft? Two men died in a crash in Tacoma after beer was stolen from a convenience store and the clerk was beat up. The suspected thieves were later found dead after being thrown from their car very early this morning. Did we mention they had been speeding? KIRO has the story.

Jail guard sprayed with own pepper spray: The Cowlitz County Jail guard was trying to move a 19-year-old inmate to another cell when the inmate tried to make a run for it. There was a tussle, and the inmate grabbed the guard’s pepper spray and sprayed her in the face, leaving her coughing, spitting and with eyes swollen. The guard called for backup, and the inmate was subdued.

Cameras everywhere: Thanks to a witness, with what we’re guessing was a cellphone, who caught a man on video smashing  windows in downtown Seattle. Man was busted and sent to jail.

Applying to the UW? Are you a criminal? This fall, those applying for undergraduate admission to the university will have to let the school know if they have a violent criminal history or are registered as sex offenders. We’re thinking that that shoplifting thingy you had when you were 14 doesn’t count. Whew …

Wildfires continue to burn east of the mountains. A statewide burn ban is in effect.
