UPDATE 5:48 p.m. | After burning for hours and sending up thick black smoke, firefighters were able to put out the flames, The Associated Press reports. The yacht was heavily damaged, but other vessels near by were not.
A Washington state Ecology Department spokesman said the marina deployed an oil spill containment boom as a precaution and a spill response contractor was standing by. However, spokesman Dustin Terpening said no fuel spill was reported as of mid-afternoon Wednesday.
ORIGINAL POST | ROCHE HARBOR, San Juan County (AP) — Officials say an 85-foot yacht is burning at the Roche Harbor marina and resort on San Juan Island.
The fire was reported Wednesday morning and there were no reports of injuries. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said the fire continued burning at midday, with the fire department and the Coast Guard responding.
Thick black smoke rose from the yacht.
