Bellingham man who fired at police is wounded
Police in Bellingham say two officers returned fire after a man fired a shotgun at them in a motel room. Police say the officers were unhurt but the man suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The Bellingham Herald reported that the 54-year-old man was in surgery Monday evening at a local hospital. His name was not immediately released.
Deputy Police Chief Flo Simon said the officers went to the room at the Villa Inn on Monday to pick up the man for a mental health evaluation.
Simon says the man pointed a short-barreled shotgun at them and fired one round. Police didn’t immediately know how many shots were fired.
The Whatcom County sheriff’s office will investigate the shooting.
