Friday Memo: Ballmer to retire … Celebs flee fire … Fireboat Alki
Ballmer to retire: The announcement comes at a time when Microsoft struggles to enter the mobile market — think Surface tablet — and PC sales are on the wane. The software company’s stock rose this morning on the news. Ballmer joined Microsoft in 1980.
Oh, no, celebrities flee wildfire: Huey Lewis and the News canceled a show and worried about their lungs because of the Sun Valley, Idaho, wildfire dubbed the Beast. Many of the artsy folks who vacation there are fleeing, too . In fact, writers who planned to gather there have nixed their convention because of the fire. Celebs were flown out of the area. Makes you wonder how local residents are dealing with the fire, don’t it …
That old fireboat Alki: The city of Seattle can’t get a break in its attempt to auction off the old boat. The city took a $10,000 hit in its second try.
Little League game canceled: The scrappy Eastlake team from Sammamish will play today after being rained out yesterday.They are in the semifinals of the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania. An earlier version of this item mistakenly said they were rained out today.
