Silverdale couple charged with 1st-degree child assault

A Kitsap County husband and wife have been arrested after the man’s 13-year-old brother told deputies that the couple routinely beat, burned and tortured him, once allegedly hammering a nail through his hand.

The Kitsap Sun reports that 27-year-old Brandon Gunn and 34-year-old Viviana Gunn were charged Monday with first-degree child assault in Kitsap County District Court after a medical examination of the boy and a search of the couple’s Silverdale home.

The newspaper says the exam found open wounds, some infected. A piece of metal was found inside the boy’s hand, and blood stains were found at the home. The boy had lived with the couple since May 2012. He told deputies the beatings started earlier this summer.

Bremerton police found the boy sleeping on a park bench late Friday night and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The sheriff’s office says bail for the couple was set at $500,000 each. It was not immediately clear late Monday whether they had lawyers.
