Keep on trekking: Captain Kirk arrives today at the Star Trek convention going on at the Hilton Seattle Airport. William Shatner takes the stage with Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager.” This all started with a TV show back in the 1960s and has spawned one of the longest-running franchises in entertainment history. It shows no sign ending any time soon. Tickets today are $35 at the door.
At the GOP helm: Susan Hutchison, former KIRO-TV anchor, is now the chairwoman of the state Republican Party, elected Saturday at meeting of the GOP’s state committee in Spokane. She didn’t make what lies ahead for her sound easy. She likened the party to the “ragtag army” at Valley Forge in the Revolutionary War, noted that the state party is “nearly broke” and faces a Democratic Party that is swelling in urban area and threatening to render Republicans irrelevant. Does she have a chance at fulfilling her vow to turn around years of GOP decline in this state? Yes, she says, because “we are right and they are wrong.”
Soccer sellout: All of the 67,000 plus seats at CenturyLink Field are sold for Sunday’s Sounders game against rival Portland. Seattle has led Major League Soccer in attendance in each of its four seasons, and Sunday’s fan gathering will be the second-largest crowd in MLS history. Clint Dempsey, the U.S. men’s national team captain, will make his much-anticipated home debut for the Sounders in front of an ESPN2 audience. Game starts at 7 p.m.
