Toddler critically injured in fall from Skyway apartment window

A 20-month-old boy fell from a second-story window onto a parked vehicle in Skyway on Tuesday night and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

Police say the toddler’s family was home in the Cambridge Park Apartments on South 133rd Street when he fell while playing near the window and pushing out the screen just after 6 p.m.

Responding firefighters found the toddler conscious with multiple injuries, said Dave Nelson, a Skyway Fire spokesman. He said if the vehicle not been below the apartment, the toddler could have died or been hurt more severely.

The King County Sheriff’s Office determined that the fall was an accident.

Screens are meant to keep bugs out, not to keep children in, a Skyway Fire release said. Window guards should be used to prevent these types of falls, the release said, along with emergency-release devices in case of fire.
