‘Unknown odor’ prompts evacuation of North Seattle apartments

A three-story apartment complex in the 800 block of North 130th Street was evacuated late Thursday night because of an “unknown odor” on the second floor, Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore said.

The Fire Department received a call around 9:30 p.m. and arrived to find four residents coughing because of the smell, prompting the evacuation of the complex’s 21 units. The residents were checked by medics and had recovered once they breathed fresh air. Hazmat crews tested for dangerous and hazardous substances and hadn’t discovered the source of the odor by just before 11 p.m. A second test was planned.

“We’re ready for whatever this turns out to be,” Moore said.

Thursday night, residents from the evacuated apartment were keeping warm on a Metro bus that arrived on the scene.
