Woman’s suspicious behavior prompts evacuation of Redmond supermarket

A young woman was arrested Monday morning after she walked into a Redmond Safeway supermarket and told an employee the store needed to be evacuated.

The 19-year-old Redmond woman walked into the Safeway, 17246 Redmond Way, around 10 a.m. Monday wearing a mask and hooded sweatshirt pulled up around her face, according to the Redmond Police Department. The woman said workers should evacuate the store, although it’s unclear if she gave a reason.

The store was evacuated in response, police said.

Police arriving at the scene found the woman inside the store and armed with at least one knife. Officers used a bean-bag projectile to subdue and apprehend the woman, who received minor injuries during the arrest.

Because the woman left a backpack in a store aisle, the Bellevue police bomb squad and King County Sheriff’s Office bomb canine unit also responded to the scene. The backpack was deemed safe.

The woman is in custody at a hospital, and a mental health evaluation has been requested. The store has re-opened.
