Change in Washington adoption record secrecy

OLYMPIA (AP) — Birth parents who placed their child for adoption on or before Oct. 1, 1993, must notify the state Health Department if they want to remain anonymous.

A new law that takes effect next July will open access to birth records.

Birth parents can choose to share personal information or keep it confidential by filing a form that can be downloaded from the Health Department website.

Starting in July, some people who were adopted before Oct. 1, 1993, will be able to request their birth certificate without going to court.
