Everett police investigate child abduction

UPDATE| 1:32 p.m:

Everett police have released a link to a surveillance video they say shows a suspect in the abduction of a 5-year-old girl from an apartment overnight.

The suspect appears in a dark shirt, light pants and light shoes in the surveillance video, police said. Police said he can be seen leaving the complex carrying something large, believed to be the child, about 50 seconds into the video.

Anyone with information about the suspect should call the Everett Police Department TIP LINE at 425-257-8450.

In addition, police are asking anyone who was near either apartment or on the Interurban Trail early this morning between 112th Street Southeast and the Everett Mall to call if they saw anything suspicious.

Police were first called around 4:30 a.m. Saturday after a partially-clothed, 5-year-old girl knocked at the door of an apartment in the 1300 block of Bruskrud Road in Everett and asked for help. Police took the child into their custody, according to police spokesman Aaron Snell.

About an hour later, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex a mile away, in the 800 block of 112th Street Southeast, after receiving a report about a screen missing from an open window. The occupant of the apartment was contacted and discovered his daughter was missing, Snell said.

Investigators say they think the suspect entered the girl’s ground-floor bedroom around 3 a.m. by removing the screen and climbing in by using a pallet as a ladder, Snell said.

A police dog followed a trail along the Interurban Trail from the girl’s home to the apartment where she sought help, Snell said. Evidence was found along the route, he said, but declined to elaborate.

Snell said investigators believe the suspect was a stranger to the child.
