2 injured in van explosion near Yelm

A man and a woman have been airlifted to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center after their van exploded this afternoon near Yelm.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Brady told The Olympian he is not sure why the van exploded, but detectives will investigate. “It doesn’t appear to be anything other than an accident at this point,” Brady said.

The explosion happened about 1:30 p.m. in a trailer park in the 17000 block of 153rd Avenue near Yelm. There are unconfirmed reports that the van’s fuel system may have been modified.

The victims’ conditions were not immediately known.
