Bomb scare closes ferry run for hours on Saturday

UPDATE: This post has been updated to correct information on when a ferry route was out of service.

A man believed to be mentally ill and rambling about explosives led authorities to shut down ferry service between Point Defiance and the Tahlequah terminal on Vashon Island for a couple hours on Saturday.

A witness overheard a 48-year old Vashon Island man talking about wanting to detonate an explosive after a car disembarked from the boat, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The state Department of Transportation said an email alert was sent out shortly after 1 p.m. letting customers know the route was out of service. The service resumed at 3:10 p.m., departing from Tahlequah. As a result of the disruption, nine one-way trips were missed, the state said.

The State Patrol swept the boat and found no bomb; the man was booked into the King County Jail.
