Federal Way police shoot suspect running away from homicide investigators

A 35-year-old Renton man suspected in a homicide investigation was shot by police in Federal Way around 6:15 p.m. Friday when he tried to run from officers questioning him, a police news release said.

The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and is stable, the release said.

The officers had confronted the man in a parking lot near the 1400 block of South 320th Street, when the man, who police say has a revoked driving privilege, tried to flee. The two SWAT officers who shot him, one from the Federal Way Police Department and one from the Renton Police Department, have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is usual in these types of situations, the release said.

No officers or others were injured. The Valley Investigative Team is looking into the officer-involved shooting while the homicide investigation is being handled by Federal Way police, the release said. Both investigations are ongoing.

The man is suspected of shooting to death an 18-year-old man, identified by the King County Medical Examiner’s office as Deshawn Boykin, in Federal Way Thursday night.

Officers were called to the 31500 block of 1st Avenue South at 8:43 p.m. for a report of gunfire. Officers were unable to find anything, but about 10 minutes later they received a report of a man who had been shot being dropped off at St. Francis Hospital, according to Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock in a statement .

The man died at the hospital. The man’s brother, who took him to the hospital, was being interviewed by police, Schrock said.

Earlier today, officers apprehended three suspects, two men and a woman, in Tacoma in connection with the case. Federal Way police said two of the suspects were cooperating with police.
