Redmond scam takes police phone number in vain

Scammers pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service have added a new twist when they call Redmond residents: A police department phone number shows up on the victims’ caller ID.

That phone number, 425-556-2500, is a Redmond Police Department number, but it isn’t a number that’s displayed on caller ID when police officers and staff make outgoing calls.

Several residents have told police they received calls in the past week telling them they owe money to the IRS and must pay up or face arrest.

Redmond police, noting that government agencies don’t make phone calls to collect money, ask that anyone receiving this type of call notify their local police department.
