8-year-old girl sexually assaulted in Kent

Kent police are investigating the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl that happened late this afternoon near a hotel.

A 14-year-old suspect has been located and is in custody after he allegedly attacked the child at about 4:30 p.m. in a wooded area near 74th Avenue South and West Willis Street, according to Kent police spokeswoman Melanie Frazier.

When police were called to the Red Lion Inn & Suites Hotel Kent/Auburn, where the victim went to for help, she was able to give police a description of the suspect, a teen who is friends with a family member.

“A case of this nature is no doubt disturbing, and hits us all to the core” said Frazier in a release.

The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment, Frazier said. Detectives are still conducting interviews and processing the scene to find out exactly what happened.
