Charges leveled in Wenatchee dog killing

By Jefferson Robbins

WENATCHEE — A man suspected of torturing and killing a dog, after goading a 15-year-old boy to assist him, was formally charged with the crime this week.

Jamar W. Stipek, 20, faces a charge of first-degree animal cruelty after police said he and the teen tortured and killed the dog.

The teen’s mother, Sarah L. Keffeler, 37, is charged with three counts of first-degree assault for allegedly firing a .22-caliber rifle toward Stipek and her son after she learned they had killed her dog.

Wenatchee police said they were called to Keffeler’s home in the 700 block of Orondo Avenue about 1:45 a.m. Oct. 17, after Stipek called 911 from an upstairs closet where he was hiding. The 15-year-old jumped out of a second-story window to escape the gunfire. There were five people in the house at the time, including two children.

Stipek and the teenager admitted killing the animal the previous evening because it was a nuisance, according to police. Stipek said he taunted the teen to convince him to carry out the killing. The 15-year-old faces arraignment Nov. 5 on an identical charge to Stipek’s.

Stipek is scheduled for trial Dec. 17, with a possible sentence of one to three months in jail if convicted. He has no prior felony record. Keffeler’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 13; she could face seven to 10 years in prison on each count.
