Boy in Auburn crash dies

A five-year-old child who was critically injured in an early morning car crash on Sunday in

Auburn died at Harborview Medical Center on Monday morning, according to police.

Auburn police said the collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when a 21-year-old Pacific man was speeding at around 90 miles per hour when he ran off Auburn Way South and crashed into a large tree. The crash occurred near the Muckleshoot Casino.

The Valley Regional Fire Authority had to extricate the driver and the five-year-old boy from the wreckage, police said. Both were critically injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center, police said. The boy has not been identified.

Another child, a nine-year-old girl, was also taken to the hospital but did not suffer life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver was the boyfriend of the children’s mother, who was not in the car, according to police.
Police said alcohol and speed are suspected factors in the collision and the driver, who remains in Harborview in critical condition, could face vehicular homicide charges.
