Bremerton police are hoping to identify scores of victims of a large-scale mail theft.

On Sunday, police were called to a secluded wooded area where they found more than 500 pieces of opened mail sent from numerous addresses in Mason, Kitsap and Pierce counties, as well as the Gig Harbor area, police said.

Included in the mail were checks, gift cards, medical and financial information, bills, photographs, packages and holiday cards.

Police are still processing the mail, but say there may be at least 100 victims who may be unaware they have been victims of mail thieves.

Investigators will be working with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to identify and notify the victims.
