Car dealer to pay $420,000 in prizes for Seahawks shutout

When a Federal Way car dealership offered $420,000 in prize money if the Seahawks shut out the New York Giants Sunday, the owners never expected they’d have to pay out the money.

But that’s what they’re doing.

“It’s crazy,” said Dan Johnson, an owner of Jet Chevrolet. “You would have thought New York would have at least scored a field goal.”

The dealership ran an ad last week saying anyone who bought a vehicle during a four-day period ending Saturday would be entered in a drawing to be one of 12 winners each getting $35,000.

Fortunately for the car dealers, they purchased an insurance policy for about $7,400 to cover the prize money.

Johnson said to be legal the dealership also had to open up the drawing to people who did not buy cars.  But car-buyers got a big advantage: Each of them got 100 tickets for the drawing; people who entered without buying cars got one.

This morning, Johnson said the company will hold a drawing to select the 12 winners and is in touch with the insurance company to see how to handle the logistics. About 20 people bought vehicles during the promotion, and  some 15 people entered without a purchase.
